The Brain Health Kitchen Cookbook: 100 Easy & Delicious Brain-Boosting Recipes
Jan 31, 2023
I recently had the pleasure of reading Dr. Annie Fenn’s new book, The Brain Health Kitchen.
I’ve had my eye on this book since her announcement on Instagram months before it was printed. I quickly pre-ordered my copy and when it finally arrived, I couldn’t wait to dive in! And let me tell you, it does not disappoint.
The Brain Health Kitchen is packed full of delicious recipes and easy-to-follow tips that make eating your way to better brain health a breeze.
In fact, some of the very first recipes I tried were selected by my kids and they were instantly a hit. Picture ooey-gooey chunky whole-grain chocolate chip cookies crafted with brain healthier ingredients like tahini, dark chocolate, and olive oil.
The cookies were absolutely an absolute smash, not only for their deliciously nutty flavor but also because they were hearty enough to feel like a good snack.
Dr. Annie Fenn nailed it when it comes to creating recipes that taste as good as they sound. Her heartfelt approach, backed by science and woven in with her personal story was captivating enough to make me read beyond just the recipes in the book – which I don’t usually do!
A Science-Backed and Practical Approach to Brain-Healthy Eating
The Brain Health Kitchen features 100 brain-boosting recipes, each of which is well-researched, outlined, and explained.
I love that in her book, Dr. Fenn not only provides what to eat but why you’re eating it, so you can truly understand the building blocks for a better brain diet.
Tips to Improve Your Diet
Her advice is based on extensive research and scientific evidence, making it trustworthy and reliable but also easy to understand and apply to daily life.
And unlike other diet-centric cookbooks, her approach to brain-healthy eating is practical and doesn’t rely on strict adherence to dietary standards that are hard to maintain or that take over your life.
Rather, she gives you helpful tips for creating a lifestyle to support your brain, stating, “whether you’re thirty-five or seventy-five, this brain health lifestyle is a proactive way to approach aging.”
And if I may add to that statement, (as a 33-year-old woman who is a brain-healthy-eating advocate myself) it’s also the best lifestyle to fuel clearer thinking, mental clarity, and a happier, less anxious version of you right now. And I say that from experience.
A MIND Diet Book with a Twist
I recently published a blog post on the MIND Diet, which is scientifically proven to reduce your risk of Alzheimer's, and delay Parkinson’s as well as ward off certain cancers.
In The Brain Health Kitchen, Dr. Fenn fabulously explains the science behind the MIND diet, and the Mediterranean diet, and provides her take on it with a plant-heavy version of these approaches, which is even better for your heart and gut health.
She also includes the best tips for grocery shopping, working your way toward a brain-friendlier diet, and adopting a brain-healthy mindset.
Brain-Boosting Recipes
While the information inside this book is invaluable, it’s the recipes that make this book truly outstanding.
From sweet treats made with brain-boosting ingredients like Almond Butter-Tahini Blondies and Glazed Citrus, Almond and Olive Oil Cake to perfect lunch dishes like Savory Waffles with Smoked Trout and Greens or Creamy Tomato Soup – this book has it all.
My favorite recipes so far include:
- The Better-for-you Grilled Cheese Sandwich
- Slow-Roasted Salmon with Avocado Butter
- And those to-die-for Chunky Whole-Grain Chocolate Chip Cookies
And I can’t wait to try the Pear and Fig Breakfast Crisp and the Lemongrass Shrimp and Rice Noodle Salad.
Conclusion
I highly recommend the Brain Health Kitchen to anyone looking to make positive, lasting changes to their brain health and overall well-being. Especially if you have a family history of Alzheimer’s or dementia.
It’s an invaluable resource packed full of science-backed and easy-to-follow recipes that make brain-healthy eating not only approachable but fun, too.
